Festive Tramezzini

Tramezzini are an ideal choice for parties and aperitifs. They can be filled in many different ways, here I propose a festive version with a rich variety of flavorful ingredients.

Ingredients

  • Sandwich bread for tramezzini
  • Mayonnaise
  • Mustard
  • Cooked ham
  • Creamy cheese (like Philadelphia)
  • Smoked salmon
  • Arugula
  • Sundried tomatoes in oil
  • Pitted black olives
  • Marinated artichoke hearts
  • Hard-boiled eggs

Preparation

  1. Spread a thin layer of mayonnaise and a bit of mustard, to taste, on both sides of the sandwich bread for tramezzini, for a spicy touch.
  2. For the first type of tramezzino, place slices of cooked ham on the bread and add a generous slice of creamy cheese. Close with another piece of bread and press lightly.
  3. For the second type, lay slices of smoked salmon on the bread, add some arugula leaves for freshness and a touch of creamy cheese. Finish with another piece of bread.
  4. For a vegetarian variant, spread a layer of chopped sundried tomatoes and artichoke hearts on one side of the bread, add some sliced black olives, and place slices of hard-boiled eggs. Top with another piece of bread.
  5. Once the tramezzini are prepared, cut them diagonally to form triangles.
  6. Arrange them on a serving plate and serve immediately or store them in the refrigerator covered with cling film to keep them fresh until serving.

Curiosity

The tramezzino is a typically Italian invention that originated in Turin in 1925. The name “tramezzino” was coined by Gabriele D’Annunzio as a replacement for the English word “sandwich”. It is a food with endless variations, perfect for any occasion and easily customizable according to personal tastes and the needs of the guests.
