Apple Heart Puff Pastries

Apple Heart Puff Pastries are a delightful and easy-to-make dessert. Excellent for a special breakfast or as an after-dinner dessert. Here is the recipe to prepare them:

Ingredients

  • 1 sheet of rectangular puff pastry
  • 2 apples (Golden or Fuji, for example)
  • Lemon juice
  • 2 tablespoons of granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon of ground cinnamon
  • 1 egg yolk for brushing
  • Powdered sugar for decorating (optional)

Preparation

  1. Preheat the oven to 190 °C (375 °F).
  2. Unroll the puff pastry and cut it into squares or rectangles; these will be the bases for your pastries.
  3. Peel the apples, remove the core, and cut them into thin slices. Put the slices in a bowl with lemon juice to prevent them from browning.
  4. In a bowl, mix the granulated sugar with the cinnamon.
  5. Arrange the apple slices onto the puff pastry squares, leaving about 1 cm border.
  6. Sprinkle the apples with the sugar and cinnamon mixture.
  7. If you wish, you can now cut out another piece of puff pastry in the shape of a heart and place it over the apples, sealing the edges with your fingers or a fork.
  8. Brush the pastries gently with the beaten egg yolk.
  9. Bake the pastries for about 20 minutes or until the puff pastry turns golden and crispy.
  10. Remove from the oven and, if desired, dust the pastries with powdered sugar before serving.

Curiosity

Puff pastry is a very versatile dough in Italian and French pastry. These two countries contest its origin, but what is certain is that puff pastry-based sweets (such as sfogliatelle or croissants) are loved all over the world. Apple Heart Puff Pastries combine the simplicity of puff pastry with the natural sweetness of apples, creating a perfect harmony for the palate.
