Hawaiian Haupia
17/11/2023Hawaiian Haupia is a traditional Hawaiian dessert, very similar to a coconut pudding. It is a light and refreshing sweet, perfect as a dessert at the end of a lunch or dinner. Here’s how to prepare Haupia with an Italian touch in the choice of ingredients, in particular in the use of good-quality coconut milk that can remind one of the creaminess of Italian ice creams.
Ingredients
- 400 ml of coconut milk
- 120 ml of water
- 5 tablespoons of sugar
- 5 tablespoons of cornstarch
- 1 pinch of salt
- Shredded coconut (optional, for garnish)
Preparation
- In a saucepan, mix the cornstarch with the sugar and salt.
- Add the water and mix well to prevent lumps from forming.
- Turn on the heat to medium intensity and add the coconut milk, continuing to stir.
- Heat the mixture almost to a boil, but without letting it boil, until it begins to thicken. This process should take about 5-10 minutes.
- Once the Haupia has reached a pudding-like consistency, remove it from the heat.
- Pour the mixture into a flat container, a baking dish, or into individual molds.
- Allow to cool at room temperature for a few minutes, then refrigerate for at least an hour, until the Haupia is completely set.
- If desired, before serving you can sprinkle with shredded coconut for an extra touch of flavor and texture.
Fun Facts
Haupia was traditionally prepared by Hawaiian natives using pia, or starch extracted from the root of a fern called “pia” or “arrowroot”. With the introduction of cornstarch, cornstarch has replaced pia in modern times, making the preparation more accessible to everyone.
