Grilled cheese sandwich

The Grilled Cheese Sandwich is a classic of American comfort cuisine, but allow me to introduce an Italian touch.

Ingredients

  • 2 slices of quality bread, such as homemade or sourdough
  • 2-3 slices of cheese, like smoked cheddar or buffalo mozzarella for an Italian twist
  • Butter, enough to spread on the bread
  • A pinch of dried oregano or fresh basil to add an Italian aroma
  • Extra virgin olive oil (optional, for an additional Italian accent)

Preparation

  1. Take the bread slices and spread butter evenly on one side of each slice. If you choose to use olive oil, brush it thinly on the outer side of the bread.
  2. Heat a skillet over medium-high heat.
  3. Place one slice of bread, buttered side down, in the hot skillet.
  4. Lay the cheese evenly over the bread and if you want to add a touch of Italian herbs, sprinkle a bit of oregano or place a few leaves of fresh basil on top of the cheese.
  5. Top with the second slice of bread, ensuring that the buttered side is facing out.
  6. Cook until the bread is golden and crispy, then carefully flip it with a spatula to toast the other side.
  7. Once both sides are golden and the cheese inside is melted, transfer the sandwich onto a plate.
  8. Cut the sandwich in half, serving immediately while it’s still hot and melty.

Did you know?

The Grilled Cheese Sandwich is a very versatile dish that can be customized with additions like tomatoes, avocado, caramelized onions or meats such as ham or bacon. In Italy, it could be compared to the traditional “mozzarella in carrozza,” another delightful example of bread and cheese melted together.
