Giraffe Cake

The giraffe cake is a fun dessert to make, especially with children, for its decoration that resembles the coat of a giraffe. Here’s how to do it!

Ingredients

  • 300 g of all-purpose flour
  • 300 g of granulated sugar
  • 4 large eggs
  • 150 ml of seed oil (such as sunflower or corn)
  • 150 ml of milk
  • 1 packet of baking powder
  • 1 pinch of salt
  • Vanilla extract or vanillin
  • Unsweetened cocoa powder (about 30-40 g)
  • Yellow food coloring (for taste, you can also use turmeric powder if you prefer a more natural choice)

Preparation

  1. Preheat the oven to 180 °C.
  2. Separate the yolks from the egg whites. Beat the whites until stiff with a pinch of salt and set aside.
  3. In another bowl, beat the yolks with the sugar until you have a light and fluffy mixture.
  4. Add the oil in a stream and continue beating. Then, incorporate the milk and a few drops of vanilla extract or vanillin.
  5. Sift the flour with the baking powder and fold it into the egg mixture, alternating with the beaten egg whites, mixing gently from the bottom up so as not to deflate the mixture.
  6. Divide the batter into two parts. In one, add the sifted cocoa powder and mix until you have a uniform color. In the other part, add the yellow food coloring or turmeric and mix well.
  7. Take a round pan (or a giraffe-shaped one if you have one), butter and flour it, and pour in alternating spoonfuls of the yellow and cocoa mixtures, to create a marbled effect that resembles the spots of a giraffe.
  8. With a toothpick or the tip of a knife, draw lines or curves between the two mixtures to enhance the effect of the spots.
  9. Bake in the oven for about 35-40 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in the center of the cake comes out clean.
  10. Remove from oven and let cool completely before serving.
