Gingerbread Crown

The gingerbread crown is a Christmas dessert that combines the tradition of gingerbread with the shape of a festive crown. Here’s how to prepare it:

Ingredients

  • 350 g of flour
  • 1 teaspoon of baking soda
  • 2 teaspoons of ground ginger
  • 1 teaspoon of ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon of ground cloves
  • 1/4 teaspoon of ground nutmeg
  • 100 g of unsalted butter at room temperature
  • 175 g of brown sugar
  • 1 large egg
  • 4 tablespoons of molasses or honey

Decoration:

  • Royal icing or powdered sugar
  • Colorful candies, to taste
  • Colored sugar or edible sprinkles (optional)

Preparation

  1. Preheat the oven to 180 °C and prepare a large baking sheet, lining it with parchment paper.

  2. In a bowl, sift and mix the flour with the baking soda and spices (ginger, cinnamon, cloves, nutmeg).

  3. In a separate bowl, use an electric whisk to beat the butter and brown sugar until you get a homogeneous mixture. Add the egg and molasses and continue to mix until they are well incorporated.

  4. Add the dry ingredients to the wet ones and mix with a wooden spoon or spatula until the dough begins to come together. Work the dough briefly with your hands until it forms a ball.

  5. Roll out the dough on a lightly floured surface to a thickness of about 0.5 cm. Cut out a large circle and then a smaller circle in the center to form the crown.

  6. Transfer the crown to a baking sheet and bake in the oven for about 10-12 minutes or until it is slightly golden.

  7. Let it cool completely on the baking sheet before decorating with royal icing, colorful candies, and sugar sprinkles.

Remember that if you do not have a spice, you can omit it or replace it with something similar that you prefer. Once decorated, your gingerbread crown will be ready to impress guests and family!

Curiosities

Gingerbread has a very long history, it is thought that the first recipes date back to the time of the Greeks and Egyptians. However, it became popular in Europe in the Middle Ages, thanks to the crusaders returning from the east with exotic spices like ginger. Over time, gingerbread became a typical Christmas sweet, appreciated for its warm mix of spices.
