Carnival Fritters

Carnival fritters, also known as apple fritters or apple fritters in some English-speaking countries, are simple and delicious sweets that bring to mind the festive atmosphere of amusement parks. Here’s how to prepare them with an Italian twist.

Ingredients

  • 2 large apples
  • 150 g of flour
  • 50 g of sugar
  • 1 egg
  • 100 ml of milk
  • 1 packet of baking powder for sweets
  • 1 teaspoon of powdered cinnamon
  • A pinch of salt
  • Powdered sugar for garnishing
  • Oil for frying

Preparation

  1. Peel the apples, remove the core, and cut them into slices about half a centimeter thick.
  2. In a bowl, mix the flour with the sugar, cinnamon, baking powder, and a pinch of salt.
  3. In another bowl, beat the egg and add the milk, stirring well.
  4. Combine the liquids with the dry ingredients and mix until you have a smooth batter.
  5. Dip the apple slices into the batter, making sure they are completely coated.
  6. Heat a generous amount of oil in a frying pan and when it is hot, fry the apple slices dipped in the batter until they become golden and crispy.
  7. Drain them on paper towels to remove the excess oil.
  8. Dust the hot fritters with powdered sugar before serving.

Trivia

Carnival fritters have popular origins and have been a simple way to transform inexpensive and readily available ingredients into something delicious that could be enjoyed during fairs and markets. In Italy, you can find similar regional versions, such as the apple fritters typical of Trentino-South Tyrol, which are often served with a dusting of granulated sugar and accompanied by mulled wine or a cup of hot tea during the winter months.
