Fried Tofu

I can provide you with a recipe for making delicious fried tofu. Here is my version with an Italian twist, perhaps using breadcrumbs flavored with Mediterranean herbs for the breading.

Ingredients

  • 200 g of tofu
  • 50 g of flour
  • 2 eggs
  • 100 g of breadcrumbs
  • 1 teaspoon of dry Italian herbs (basil, oregano, rosemary)
  • Salt, as needed
  • Pepper, as needed
  • Seed oil for frying

Preparation

  1. Dry the tofu well with paper towels and cut it into cubes or slices about 1-1.5 cm thick.
  2. In three separate deep plates, arrange the flour, beaten eggs with a pinch of salt and pepper, and the breadcrumbs mixed with the dry herbs.
  3. Coat the tofu pieces first in the flour, making sure it is covered on all sides, then in the egg, and finally in the breadcrumbs, pressing so the breading sticks well.
  4. Heat the seed oil in a large frying pan until it reaches a temperature of about 180 °C.
  5. Fry the breaded tofu in hot oil until it becomes golden and crispy on all sides. This should take about 2-3 minutes per side. Avoid overlapping the tofu pieces while frying to ensure even cooking.
  6. Remove the fried tofu from the oil with a slotted spoon and let it drain on paper towels to remove excess oil.
  7. Serve hot, perhaps with a dip on the side like soy sauce, spicy mayo, or sweet and sour sauce.

Curiosity

Tofu is a key ingredient in Asian cuisine, especially in vegetarian and vegan cooking, as it is rich in protein. The crispy and golden breading in this recipe contrasts with the soft inner texture, making the dish appealing even to those who normally do not enjoy tofu. For a lighter variation, the tofu can also be baked instead of fried.
