Fried Meatballs

Fried meatballs are a simple and tasty dish, very much loved in the Italian tradition. Here is the basic recipe for fried meatballs:

Ingredients

  • 500g of ground meat (beef, pork, or mixed)
  • 1 egg
  • 50g of stale bread
  • 50ml of milk
  • 40g of grated Parmesan cheese
  • 1 clove of garlic
  • Parsley to taste
  • Salt to taste
  • Pepper to taste
  • Nutmeg (optional)
  • Flour for breading
  • Seed oil or extra virgin olive oil for frying

Preparation

  1. Begin by soaking the stale bread in milk for a few minutes until it becomes soft.
  2. In a large bowl, mix the ground meat with the egg, squeezed bread, parmesan, finely chopped garlic, chopped parsley, salt, pepper, and a pinch of nutmeg, if desired.
  3. Knead well with your hands until the mixture is homogeneous.
  4. Form small balls from portions of the mixture, slightly flattening them.
  5. Coat each meatball in flour to cover them evenly.
  6. Heat plenty of oil in a frying pan and fry the meatballs, turning them frequently until they take on a uniform golden color on all sides.
  7. After frying, transfer them to a plate lined with paper towels to remove the excess oil.

Interesting Facts

The meatballs can be customized in various ways, for example by adding your preferred aromatic herbs to the mixture or another type of grated cheese. They can also be filled with a piece of stringy cheese or with a cube of cooked ham before breading and frying, for an even more delicious result!

You can serve the fried meatballs as a main course along with a side of vegetables, or they can be enjoyed as an appetizer or as part of an aperitif accompanied by a sauce of your choice. Enjoy your meal!
