Fried Green Tomatoes

Fried green tomatoes are a classic dish from the cuisine of the southern United States, but I can give them an Italian twist to make them even tastier. Here’s the recipe for an “Italian-style” version of fried green tomatoes:

Ingredients

  • 4 large green tomatoes, sliced about 1/2 cm thick
  • 150 g of flour
  • 2 large eggs
  • 150 g of breadcrumbs
  • 50 g of finely grated Parmesan cheese
  • 1 tablespoon of dried oregano
  • Extra virgin olive oil or oil for frying
  • Salt and black pepper to taste

Preparation

  1. First, prepare three deep plates: one with flour, the second with beaten eggs, and the third with a mix of breadcrumbs, Parmesan and oregano.

  2. Season the tomato slices with a pinch of salt and pepper on both sides.

  3. Dip each tomato slice in the flour, making sure it is completely covered. Shake off the excess by gently tapping.

  4. After flour, dip the slices into the beaten eggs, ensuring the mixture adheres well.

  5. Finally, lay them in the mix of breadcrumbs and Parmesan, pressing lightly to make the coating stick on both sides.

  6. Heat plenty of oil in a frying pan over medium-high heat, and fry the tomatoes once the oil is hot, but not smoking.

  7. Fry for about 2-3 minutes on each side or until they are golden and crispy.

  8. Drain on paper towels to remove excess oil. Serve hot.

They can be served with an aioli sauce or, for an even more Italian touch, with a fresh marinara sauce. Enjoy your meal!

Curiosity

Fried green tomatoes gained nationwide popularity in the United States following the release of the eponymous film in 1991, but their presence in southern cooking dates back much further. By revisiting them with Italian ingredients such as Parmesan and oregano, a delicious encounter between two culinary cultures is created.
