Fried Caprese

Fried Caprese is a tasty reinterpretation of the classic Italian appetizer, Caprese, which combines mozzarella, tomato, and basil. In this version, the ingredients are breaded and fried, creating a crunchy and stringy union. Here’s how to prepare it.

Ingredients

  • 250 g of buffalo mozzarella
  • 2 ripe tomatoes, preferably San Marzano variety
  • Flour as needed
  • 2 eggs
  • Breadcrumbs as needed
  • Fresh basil leaves
  • Seed oil for frying
  • Salt
  • Pepper

Preparation

  1. Cut the buffalo mozzarella into slices about 1 cm thick and let them drain to remove excess liquid.
  2. Also cut the tomatoes into slices of the same thickness.
  3. Prepare three bowls: in the first put some flour, in the second beat the eggs with a pinch of salt and pepper, and in the third place the breadcrumbs.
  4. Take a slice of mozzarella, place a basil leaf on it, and cover with a tomato slice. Lightly salt the tomato.
  5. Bread each “sandwich” of mozzarella and tomato by first passing it in the flour, then in the beaten egg, and finally in the breadcrumbs, making sure to cover all sides well.
  6. Heat plenty of seed oil in a pan to a temperature of 170-180 °C.
  7. Fry the breaded Caprese until they become golden and crunchy on both sides.
  8. Drain them on paper towels to remove excess oil.
  9. Serve immediately, perhaps accompanied with a fresh tomato sauce or a basil sauce to intensify the flavors.
