Fig and gorgonzola crostini

Fig and gorgonzola crostini are an excellent choice for a sophisticated and delicious appetizer. Here is the recipe to prepare this delicacy.

Ingredients

  • Slices of homemade bread
  • Gorgonzola cheese (mild)
  • Fresh figs
  • Honey (preferably acacia or chestnut for its intense aroma)
  • Roughly chopped walnuts (optional)
  • Extra virgin olive oil
  • Salt and pepper (to taste)

Preparation

  1. Start by preheating the oven to 180 °C.
  2. Cut the figs into quarters or slices, according to your preference.
  3. Arrange the slices of homemade bread on a baking tray lined with parchment paper and drizzle lightly with extra virgin olive oil. Optionally, you may lightly toast the bread in the oven to make it crisp, but it’s important not to brown it too much.
  4. Cut the gorgonzola into pieces or spread it on the bread, depending on its consistency.
  5. Lay the pieces of fig on top of the gorgonzola and sprinkle a small amount of honey on each crostini. If you like, also add a pinch of salt and pepper to balance the flavors.
  6. If desired, scatter some chopped walnuts over the bread slices too.
  7. Put the crostini in the oven and leave them for a few minutes, until the gorgonzola begins to melt and becomes slightly golden. Be careful not to leave them in too long to prevent the honey from caramelizing excessively.
  8. Once out of the oven, let the crostini cool for a brief moment before serving.

The fig and gorgonzola crostini pair beautifully with a glass of fresh and aromatic white wine, which can balance the strong flavor of the gorgonzola and the sweetness of the figs and honey. A Pinot Grigio or a Riesling could be ideal choices.

Curiosity

Figs are a fruit typically found in the Mediterranean and are widely used in Italy in numerous preparations, both sweet and savory. Their sweet flavor pairs wonderfully with creamy and spicy cheeses, like gorgonzola, creating a taste contrast that is particularly appreciated in gastronomy.
