Fried pizza strips

Fried pizza strips are a tasty and simple appetizer or snack to prepare. Remember that, as a true Italian, I always have a soft spot for variants that include typically local ingredients! So I will present you with a basic recipe that you can then customize to your liking.

Ingredients

  • 250g of pizza dough (you can buy it ready-made or prepare it yourself)
  • Seed oil for frying
  • Salt
  • Pepper
  • Oregano
  • Other seasonings to taste: Grated Parmesan, anchovies, diced cherry tomatoes, arugula, etc.

Preparation

  1. If you have bought ready-made dough, let it warm to room temperature.
  2. Roll out the dough until it is about half a centimeter thick.
  3. Cut the dough into strips, in whatever shape and size you prefer.
  4. Heat a generous amount of seed oil in a frying pan and bring it to a temperature of 180 °C.
  5. Fry the strips a few at a time until they become golden and crispy.
  6. Remove the strips from the oil with a slotted spoon and place them on paper towels to remove excess oil.
  7. Season with salt, pepper, and oregano while they are still hot.
  8. If you wish, add other toppings to your liking, such as Parmesan shavings, anchovies, or cherry tomatoes.

Fried pizza strips are perfect on their own or accompanied by a dipping sauce, such as spicy sauce or a yogurt and herb sauce. Enjoy your meal!

Curiosity

This dish can be considered a street food variant of the classic pizza, and it somewhat resembles savory zeppole. In some areas of Italy, the strips are enriched with other typical regional ingredients, such as ‘nduja in Calabria or guanciale in Lazio.
