Double cheeseburger
17/11/2023Here is the recipe for preparing succulent double cheeseburgers with an Italian twist. If you wish to maintain the American authenticity of the recipe, feel free to follow the classic version, but if you want to add a pinch of Italy, I will suggest some variations along the way.
Ingredients
- 4 beef burgers (preferably high quality, about 150g each)
- 4 burger buns (brioche if possible, for a softer, sweeter touch)
- 8 slices of cheddar cheese (or sweet provolone for an Italian alternative)
- Iceberg lettuce, shredded
- 2 ripe tomatoes, sliced
- Red onion, thinly sliced (optional)
- Pickle slices (optional)
- Salt and pepper to taste
- Olive oil or butter
- Mayonnaise, ketchup, and mustard (or a special sauce if you prefer)
To make your special sauce a bit more Italian, you might mix mayonnaise with a dash of pesto or add a bit of balsamic vinegar to give a stronger flavor.
Preparation
-
Heat up the grill or a cast-iron skillet to medium-high heat. You might lightly grease the surface with olive oil or butter to prevent the burgers from sticking.
-
Season both sides of the burgers with salt and pepper before placing them on the grill or in the skillet.
-
Cook the burgers for about 2-4 minutes on each side for a rare or medium-rare finish. If you prefer them more cooked, add 1-2 minutes per side. On the second turn, lay a slice of cheese on each burger to melt.
-
While the burgers are cooking, you can lightly toast the buns, being careful not to burn them.
-
Now let’s prepare the double cheeseburger: on the bottom bun, spread some mayonnaise, ketchup, and mustard (or your special sauce), then add some lettuce and tomato slices.
-
Place the first cheese-topped burger on the tomato, then stack the second cheese-topped burger.
-
If you like, add onion and pickles. Finally, top with the upper half of the bun.
Remember that, as a double cheeseburger, we’re talking about a very rich dish: for a lighter option, you might opt for a single layer of burger and cheese.
Curiosities
The cheeseburger is an icon of American fast food cuisine. Its success lies as much in its simplicity as in the rich combination of flavors and textures. Adding an Italian touch with provolone cheese or a fresh arugula salad instead of lettuce can make it even more delicious for those who love Italian cuisine.
