Donuts

I can provide you with a recipe for making delicious donuts, those soft and sweet rings typical of American cuisine. Here I propose a version that I hope you’ll like, and let’s not forget that even if it’s not an Italian recipe, the joy of a good dessert is international!

Ingredients

  • 500 g of all-purpose flour
  • 60 g of granulated sugar
  • 250 ml of lukewarm milk
  • 50 g of soft butter
  • 2 eggs
  • 25 g of fresh brewer’s yeast
  • 1 pinch of salt
  • Grated zest of 1 lemon (optional)
  • Seed oil for frying
  • Powdered sugar for garnishing (optional)

Preparation

  1. Dissolve the yeast in the warm milk in a bowl.
  2. In another large bowl, combine the flour, sugar, and salt.
  3. Add the eggs, the soft butter, and if you like, the grated lemon zest.
  4. Pour the milk with yeast into the bowl with the dry ingredients and start to knead until you obtain a smooth and homogenous dough.
  5. Cover the dough with a clean cloth and allow to rise in a draught-free place for about 2 hours or until it doubles in volume.
  6. Roll out the dough to about 1.5 cm thickness.
  7. Use a round cutter or a glass to cut circles from the dough, and with a smaller cap make a hole in the center of each circle to obtain the classic donut shape.
  8. Let the donuts rest again on a floured tray for about 30 minutes.
  9. Fry the donuts in hot seed oil until they turn golden, then drain them on paper towels.
  10. If you wish, while they are still hot, roll the donuts in powdered sugar to cover them or decorate them with a glaze of your choice.

Here is the basic recipe for classic donuts. You can vary the ingredients by adding spices like cinnamon to the dough or decorating them with colored icings, melted chocolate, and sprinkles to make them even more tempting.

If following this recipe you find yourself without some of the ingredients on hand, let me know and I will give you the appropriate alternatives!
