Colorful Sandwiches

Making colorful sandwiches can be a creative and fun way to make a lunch or a snack more interesting! Adding natural colors to sandwich dough is a great method to achieve this effect. Here is a basic recipe with some ideas for coloring your sandwiches.

Ingredients for the base dough:

  • 500 g of flour 0 or manitoba
  • 250 ml of lukewarm water
  • 12 g of fresh yeast or 4 g of dry yeast
  • 1 teaspoon of sugar
  • 2 tablespoons of extra virgin olive oil
  • 1 teaspoon of salt

To color the dough:

  • Spinach for green (a handful, to blanch and puree)
  • Beetroot for red (one small, to cook and puree)
  • Pumpkin for orange (a piece, to steam and puree)
  • Turmeric powder for yellow (one tablespoon, to add directly to the dough)
  • Vegetable charcoal powder for black (one tablespoon, to add directly to the dough)

Preparation

  1. Dissolve the yeast in the lukewarm water with the sugar and let it rest for a few minutes until it starts to foam.
  2. Meanwhile, in a large bowl, pour the flour and make a well in the center.
  3. Add the oil and the dissolved yeast in the water to the center of the flour and start to knead, also adding the salt.
  4. Divide the dough into equal parts, based on the number of colors you want to use.
  5. For each portion of dough, incorporate one of the colored preparations you’ve chosen.
  6. Work the doughs until they are smooth and homogeneous, then cover them and let them rise in a warm place for at least 1-2 hours.
  7. Once the dough has doubled in volume, divide it into small balls, then flatten them slightly to give them the shape of the sandwiches.
  8. Place the sandwiches on a baking tray lined with parchment paper, cover them with a cloth and let them rise again for about 30-40 minutes.
  9. Bake in a preheated oven at 180 °C for about 20 minutes until they are golden.
  10. Let the colorful sandwiches cool on a rack before serving.
