Cocoa Waffles

Here is the recipe for delicious cocoa waffles with an Italian touch that could be the addition of a little espresso coffee to intensify the flavor of the cocoa, but feel free to omit it if you prefer the classic version.

Ingredients

  • 250 g of flour
  • 50 g of cocoa powder
  • 2 tablespoons of sugar
  • 1 tablespoon of baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon of salt
  • 2 large eggs
  • 400 ml of whole milk
  • 100 ml of seed oil or cooled melted butter
  • 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract
  • (Optional) 1 cooled espresso coffee

Preparation

  1. In a large bowl, combine the flour, cocoa powder, sugar, baking powder, and salt, mixing until well combined.
  2. In another bowl, beat the eggs and then add the milk, oil or melted butter, and vanilla extract. If you choose to include the espresso coffee, add it to these liquids.
  3. Make a well in the center of the dry ingredients and pour in the liquids. Mix everything together until smooth but avoid overworking the batter.
  4. Heat up the waffle iron and lightly grease it with oil or butter. Pour the right amount of batter into the hot iron and cook according to your appliance’s instructions, or until the waffles are crispy and cooked on the outside.
  5. Serve the waffles hot with your preferred toppings, such as maple syrup, fresh fruit, ice cream, or a dusting of powdered sugar.

Curiosity

Waffles, although mainly a specialty of Northern Europe and the United States, have gained popularity around the world. In Italy, they are not traditionally part of the breakfast, but are becoming increasingly common here too, thanks to their versatility and the possibility of customizing them with delicious Italian ingredients like hazelnuts, mascarpone, or Modica chocolate.
