Club Sandwich

I can tell you how to prepare an Italian-style Club Sandwich, adding a touch of Mediterranean flavor to this classic American recipe.

Ingredients

  • 6 slices of sandwich bread
  • 2 slices of high-quality cooked ham
  • 6 thin slices of roasted turkey
  • 2 leaves of romaine lettuce
  • 2 ripe tomatoes, sliced
  • Mayonnaise to taste
  • 4 slices of crispy bacon (you can also use guanciale if you prefer a more intense flavor)
  • 2 eggs, cooked sunny-side up or scrambled (depending on preference)
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • Extra virgin olive oil to dress the tomato and lettuce

Preparation

  1. Lightly toast the sandwich bread slices until they are golden and crispy. This will provide the crispy base for the sandwich.
  2. While the bread is cooling, cook the bacon (or guanciale) in a pan until it is very crispy, then place it on paper towels to remove excess fat.
  3. Prepare the sunny-side up (or scrambled) eggs in another pan and season them lightly with salt and pepper.
  4. Dress the tomatoes and lettuce with a drizzle of extra virgin olive oil, salt, and pepper.
  5. Now begin to build the Club Sandwich: spread mayonnaise on three slices of bread, then on one slice, arrange the cooked ham and roasted turkey slices, add some lettuce and two slices of tomato.
  6. Place another slice of bread with mayonnaise-side down and spread another layer of mayonnaise on the top of this second slice.
  7. Add another layer of meat, the bacon, the other leaf of lettuce, and the last two slices of tomato.
  8. Complete with the last slice of bread with the mayonnaise facing down and use toothpicks to secure the sandwich so that it holds its shape.
  9. Cut the sandwich diagonally into four triangles and serve with french fries or a light salad if you prefer a healthier side dish.

Curiosity

The Club Sandwich originated in the United States at the end of the 19th century and the name “club” is an acronym for “chicken and lettuce under bacon”. The recipe has undergone many variations over time and in different countries, so adding Italian elements such as cooked ham, bacon or guanciale further enriches the tradition of this beloved sandwich.
