Chocolate and Vanilla Ice Cream Log

The chocolate and vanilla ice cream log is a delicious and relatively simple dessert to prepare. Here’s the recipe:

Ingredients

  • 500 ml of vanilla ice cream
  • 500 ml of chocolate ice cream
  • 200 g of cocoa biscuits
  • 150 g of melted butter
  • 100 g of dark chocolate
  • Chopped nuts or hazelnut grains (optional, for decoration)

Preparation

  1. Line a log-shaped mold with clear film to make it easier to unmold later.
  2. Start by crumbling the cocoa biscuits until they are almost powdered. Then mix them with the melted butter to obtain a homogeneous mixture.
  3. Spread the biscuit and butter base into the mold, pressing it well onto the bottom and sides to create a kind of shell. Place in the freezer for about 30 minutes to firm up.
  4. Once the base is cold and solid, take the vanilla ice cream and let it soften slightly at room temperature. Then spread it inside the biscuit base, creating an even layer. Put back in the freezer for about 15 minutes.
  5. Repeat the process with the chocolate ice cream, adding it on top of the vanilla layer. If you wish, you can mix in some chopped nuts with the vanilla or chocolate to add crunchiness.
  6. Even out the surface well and put back in the freezer for a few hours, until the log is well solidified.
  7. In the meantime, melt the dark chocolate in a double boiler or in the microwave.
  8. Unmold the log and remove the film. Transfer it to a serving plate and cover the surface with the melted dark chocolate. If you want, you can decorate with chopped nuts or hazelnut grains.
  9. Let the chocolate solidify slightly and then serve.

Curiosity

The ice cream log is a summer variant of the more classic Christmas log, also known as Bûche de Noël in France. While the latter is a dessert made of sponge cake and buttercream, decorated to resemble a tree trunk, the ice cream version can be enjoyed as a refreshment during the warmer months.
