Chocolate and Ginger Squares

Chocolate and ginger squares are a great mix between the intense sweetness of chocolate and the spicy, aromatic note of ginger. Here’s the recipe for you:

Ingredients

  • 200 g of dark chocolate
  • 100 g of butter
  • 150 g of brown sugar
  • 3 eggs
  • 100 g of flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon of baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon of ground ginger
  • A pinch of salt
  • Chopped candied ginger (optional, for decoration)

Preparation

  1. Pre-heat the oven to 180 degrees C and line a 20 cm square baking tin with parchment paper.
  2. Melt the dark chocolate with butter in a double boiler, and let it cool slightly.
  3. In a bowl, whisk the eggs with the sugar until you have a light and fluffy mixture.
  4. Add the lukewarm melted chocolate to the egg and sugar mixture, and fold gently.
  5. Sift the flour, baking powder, and ground ginger and incorporate it into the mixture, also adding a pinch of salt.
  6. Pour the mixture into the prepared tin and level the surface.
  7. Bake in the pre-heated oven for about 20-25 minutes, or until a skewer inserted into the center comes out with a few moist crumbs attached.
  8. Let it cool in the tin, then sprinkle with chopped candied ginger, if desired, before cutting into squares.

A little-known fact: besides being beneficial for health, thanks to its anti-inflammatory and digestive properties, ginger adds an exotic touch to many desserts, balancing the intensity of the chocolate in a surprising way. Moreover, according to some traditions, it is known for its aphrodisiac properties. One more reason to enjoy these delicious squares!
