Chocolate Puff Pastry and Coffee Semifreddo

Here’s a recipe for a semifreddo with chocolate puff pastries and coffee, a fresh and tantalizing dessert that will be a perfect end to a meal.

Ingredients

  • 200 g of chocolate puff pastries
  • 3 egg yolks
  • 100 g of sugar
  • 250 ml of fresh cream
  • 2 tablespoons of concentrated espresso coffee
  • 50 g of dark chocolate
  • Unsweetened cocoa powder for decoration

Preparation

  1. Begin by breaking the chocolate puff pastries into not too small pieces and set them aside.
  2. Beat the egg yolks with the sugar in a large bowl until they become light and fluffy. You can use an electric mixer to make this step easier.
  3. In another bowl, whip the cream until it is very firm.
  4. Gently fold the whipped cream into the yolk and sugar mixture, taking care not to deflate it.
  5. Add the espresso coffee to the mixture and stir well to blend.
  6. Transfer half of the mixture into a container suitable for the freezer, preferably rectangular. Add a layer of chocolate puff pastries and then cover with the rest of the mixture.
  7. Grate the dark chocolate and sprinkle it over the semifreddo.
  8. Cover the container with a lid or cling film and put it in the freezer for at least 4 hours, or until the semifreddo is solidified.
  9. Before serving, dust with unsweetened cocoa powder and garnish with additional puff pastries if desired.

Curiosity

Semifreddo is a spoon dessert typical of Italian cuisine that stands out for being a cross between ice cream and mousse. The name “semifreddo” refers to the semi-frozen texture that makes it softer than regular ice cream. Furthermore, this dessert does not require the use of an ice cream maker, making it simpler to prepare at home.

This chocolate and coffee version is a tribute to classic Italian flavors, perfect for coffee and chocolate lovers. You might accompany it with a sweet dessert wine or vin santo for an even more traditional touch.
