Chocolate and Chili Cake

The chocolate cake with chili is a fascinating blend of sweetness and spiciness that awakens the palate. Here’s how to give it an Italian touch:

Ingredients

  • 200 g of good quality dark chocolate
  • 100 g of butter
  • 150 g of sugar
  • 3 eggs
  • 70 g of all-purpose flour
  • 1 pinch of salt
  • 1 fresh hot red chili pepper or a bit of chili powder (according to your spice tolerance)
  • Icing sugar (for decoration, optional)

Preparation

  1. Preheat the oven to 180° C.
  2. Melt the chocolate in a bain-marie along with the butter, being careful not to burn the chocolate. Once melted, mix them until you have a homogeneous mixture.
  3. In a separate bowl, whip the eggs with the sugar until they become frothy and light in color.
  4. Add the melted chocolate to the egg and sugar mixture, mixing gently with a spatula.
  5. Add the sifted flour and a pinch of salt, mixing until everything is well combined.
  6. Finally, wash the fresh chili, remove the seeds and chop it into very small pieces. If you are using chili powder, add enough to give the right degree of spiciness.
  7. Incorporate the chili into the mixture.
  8. Pour the batter into a buttered and floured cake tin or lined with parchment paper.
  9. Bake for about 20-25 minutes, or until the cake is cooked but still soft in the center (do the skewer test).
  10. Let the cake cool before unmolding it.

If you wish, once it’s cool you can dust the cake with icing sugar. The combination of the heat of the chili with the rich flavor of the chocolate will create a unique experience for the palate.

Curiosity

Chili pepper is known not only for its kick of spiciness that enlivens dishes but also for its beneficial properties, such as stimulating blood circulation and having positive effects on the mood, thanks to the release of endorphins.
