Cassata Coffee

Cassata coffee is a sweet beverage that combines the intense aroma of coffee with the flavors of Sicilian cassata, a traditional cake from southern Italy rich in ricotta, candied fruits, and sugar icing. Here is the recipe:

Ingredients

  • Strong espresso coffee, about 30 ml
  • Sweet ricotta (pre-sweetened), 1 tablespoon
  • Candied fruit in small pieces, 1 tablespoon
  • Chocolate chips or shredded dark chocolate, 1 teaspoon
  • Whole milk, 60 ml
  • Sugar syrup, 1 teaspoon (optional)
  • Whipped cream, for garnish
  • Candied orange peel or a cherry, for garnish

Preparation

  1. Prepare a strong espresso coffee and let it cool down slightly.
  2. In a large glass or a cappuccino cup, place one tablespoon of sweet ricotta.
  3. Add the candied fruit cut into small pieces and the chocolate chips or shredded chocolate.
  4. Pour the hot espresso over the ricotta and candied fruits.
  5. In a small pot, heat the milk until it becomes slightly warm (being careful not to bring it to a boil), then froth it using an electric mixer or a milk frother.
  6. Gently pour the warm frothed milk into the glass, trying to keep the foam on the surface.
  7. If you wish to add sweetness, you can stir in a teaspoon of sugar syrup to the coffee before adding the milk.
  8. Top it all with a dollop of whipped cream on the surface.
  9. Garnish with a piece of candied orange peel or a cherry to mimic the classic decorations of cassata.

You can serve cassata coffee as a dessert after dinner or as an afternoon treat. This beverage combines the tradition of Italian coffee with the sweet and festive taste of cassata, bringing a bit of the Sicilian sun into your cup.
