Blueberry Swirls

Blueberry swirls are a delight for both the eyes and the palate. Here’s how to prepare this tasty dessert.

Ingredients

  • 500 g of puff pastry
  • 150 g of fresh or frozen blueberries
  • 100 g of granulated sugar
  • 1 egg (for glazing)
  • Powdered sugar (for decoration)

Preparation

  1. If you are using frozen blueberries, make sure to thaw them and dry them well with kitchen paper.
  2. Roll out the puff pastry on a work surface, keeping the baking paper underneath to prevent sticking.
  3. Evenly distribute the granulated sugar over the entire surface of the puff pastry.
  4. Arrange the blueberries on top of the sugar so that they cover the entire dough.
  5. Gently roll the puff pastry on itself to form a tight roll, using the baking paper if necessary.
  6. Using a sharp knife, cut the roll into slices about 2 cm thick, thus obtaining the swirls.
  7. Place the swirls with the spiral facing up on a baking tray lined with parchment paper, leaving some space between each one.
  8. Beat the egg and brush the surface of the swirls to ensure they become golden during baking.
  9. Bake in a preheated oven at 180 °C for about 15-20 minutes or until the swirls turn golden and crispy.
  10. Once baked, let them cool on a wire rack and before serving, dust with powdered sugar to taste.

Curiosity

Sweet swirls, also known as “swirls” or “rolls” in other cultures, are a classic example of pastry that lends itself to numerous variations, both in the filling and in shape. The blueberry version is perfect for taking advantage of the slightly tart flavor of this fruit, which balances perfectly with the sweetness of the sugar.

If you want an additional Italian touch, you could add a layer of custard cream under the blueberries before rolling the puff pastry. Remember, moreover, that the swirls keep well for a few days if stored in airtight containers. Happy baking!
