Black and White Swirl Cookies
17/11/2023Preparing black and white swirl cookies can be a fun challenge in the kitchen. These cookies are also known as “swirl cookies” and feature a distinctive appearance with alternating layers of cocoa dough and vanilla dough. Here is how you can make them:
Ingredients
For the vanilla dough:
- 200 grams of flour
- 100 grams of soft butter
- 100 grams of sugar
- 1 egg
- 1/2 teaspoon of vanilla extract
- A pinch of salt
For the cocoa dough:
- 180 grams of flour
- 20 grams of cocoa powder
- 100 grams of soft butter
- 100 grams of sugar
- 1 egg
- A pinch of salt
Preparation
-
For the vanilla dough:
- Cream the butter with sugar until smooth.
- Add the egg and vanilla extract, then mix.
- Incorporate the sifted flour and salt, then knead the dough until it forms a ball. Wrap it in cling film and let it rest in the refrigerator for about 30 minutes.
-
For the cocoa dough:
- Repeat the process for the vanilla dough, substituting part of the flour with cocoa powder.
- Again, form a ball and let it rest in the refrigerator wrapped in film.
-
To form the swirl cookies:
- Roll out the two dough balls (vanilla and cocoa) separately on two sheets of parchment paper, forming two rectangles of the same size and about 5mm thick.
- Gently place one sheet on top of the other and lightly press to adhere them together.
- Carefully roll up the resulting rectangle, starting from one of the longer sides, to form a cylinder.
- Wrap the cylinder in cling film and let it cool in the refrigerator for at least an hour.
-
Baking:
- Preheat the oven to 180 °C.
- Remove the cling film and cut the cylinder into slices about 5mm thick.
- Place the cookies on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper, keeping them spaced apart.
- Bake in the preheated oven for about 10-12 minutes or until the edges just begin to brown.
- Let the cookies cool on a wire rack before serving.
