Beef Fajitas
17/11/2023I can provide you with a recipe for Beef Fajitas, a dish originating from Tex-Mex cuisine but with an Italian twist I’ll propose. Fajitas generally consist of sliced meat cooked with bell peppers and onions, and served on flour tortillas. Here’s how to prepare them:
Ingredients
- 500g of beef slices (such as skirt or hanger steak)
- 2 bell peppers of different colors (red and yellow, for example)
- 1 large onion
- 2 tablespoons of extra virgin olive oil
- Salt and pepper to taste
- 1 tablespoon of lime juice
- 1 teaspoon of ground cumin
- 1 teaspoon of smoked paprika
- Flour tortillas
- To serve: chopped fresh cilantro, avocado slices, spicy tomato salsa, lime juice
Preparation
- Start by cutting the beef slices into strips not too thick and place them in a bowl.
- Season the meat with salt, pepper, cumin, paprika, and lime juice. Mix well to flavor the meat and let it marinate for at least 30 minutes.
- In the meantime, wash the bell peppers and cut them into strips, and also slice the onion thinly.
- Heat the extra virgin olive oil in a large pan or griddle over medium-high heat.
- Add the onions and bell peppers to the pan first and cook for about 5 minutes until they are slightly softened but still crunchy. Remove them from the pan and set aside.
- In the same pan, cook the strips of marinated meat until they are well browned but still juicy (about 5 minutes).
- Reintroduce the onions and bell peppers into the pan with the meat, toss everything together for another minute so that the flavors mix.
- Serve the hot fajitas with the flour tortillas and the condiments: chopped fresh cilantro, avocado slices, spicy tomato salsa, and additional lime juice.
Fun Fact
Fajitas were originally prepared by Texan cowboys using less prized cuts of meat. Today, they have become a popular dish enjoyed in many variants, with chicken, shrimp, or even in a vegetarian version.
I hope you enjoy this recipe, and that it brings a bit of Tex-Mex flavor with an Italian twist thanks to the use of extra virgin olive oil. Buon appetito!
