Batter-Fried Onion Rings

Batter-fried onion rings are a tasty appetizer that can also be easily prepared with an Italian twist. Using fresh ingredients and a light batter, these onion rings will be crispy and delicious. Here’s how to make them.

Ingredients

  • 2 large onions
  • 100 g of flour
  • 1 egg
  • 100 ml of milk
  • A pinch of salt
  • Oil for frying (for example, sunflower or peanut oil)
  • (Optional) A pinch of black pepper or chili pepper to add some spiciness

To give this recipe a bit of an Italian touch, you might add a sprinkle of grated Parmesan or aromatic herbs such as oregano or dried basil to the batter.

Preparation

  1. Start by peeling the onions and slicing them into rings about 1 cm thick. Separate the rings from each other.
  2. In a bowl, mix the flour with the salt (and pepper or chili pepper if desired) and add the egg. Begin to combine.
  3. Gradually add the milk, continuing to stir until you get a smooth batter without lumps.
  4. Heat plenty of oil in a deep pan or a fryer. The oil is ready when it reaches 180 °C (356 °F) or when a wooden toothpick placed in it forms bubbles around it.
  5. Take the onion rings, dip them one at a time into the batter, making sure to cover them completely.
  6. Fry the batter-dipped onion rings in the hot oil until they turn golden and crispy. It will take about 2-3 minutes per side.
  7. Remove the rings from the pan with a slotted spoon and let them drain on a plate lined with paper towels to remove excess oil.
  8. Serve them hot, perhaps with some aioli or ketchup for dipping.
