Banana split

The Banana Split is a classic dessert that combines fruit, ice cream, and sauces in a bold mix of flavors and textures. Here’s how to prepare a traditional version:

Ingredients

  • 1 ripe banana
  • 3 scoops of ice cream (traditionally chocolate, vanilla, and strawberry)
  • Chocolate sauce
  • Whipped cream
  • Maraschino cherries
  • Hazelnut or peanut sprinkles (optional)
  • Strawberry syrup or another syrup of your choice (optional)

Preparation

  1. Peel the banana and slice it in half lengthwise.
  2. Place the two banana halves on the sides of a long dessert glass or serving plate.
  3. Carefully place the scoops of ice cream in the center, one chocolate, one vanilla, and one strawberry.
  4. Cover the ice cream scoops with chocolate sauce, and if you like, add some strawberry syrup as well.
  5. Decorate with a generous amount of whipped cream on top of each scoop of ice cream.
  6. Sprinkle with hazelnut or peanut sprinkles to add crunchiness.
  7. Top off each scoop with a maraschino cherry.
  8. If desired, add extra toppings or drizzles of other sauces of your choice.

Trivia

The Banana Split originated in the United States at the end of the 1800s and has since spread in many variations around the world. In Italy, you might find versions with the addition of liqueurs in the toppings or the replacement of hazelnut sprinkles with toasted and chopped almonds for a more Mediterranean aroma.
