Baked whole wheat donuts

Here is the recipe for baked whole wheat donuts, a healthier and lighter version compared to the classic fried donuts.

Ingredients

  • 250 grams of whole wheat flour
  • 50 grams of brown sugar
  • 1 egg (at room temperature)
  • 50 ml of seed oil or coconut oil
  • 120 ml of milk (vegetable milk for a lactose-free version is also fine)
  • 1 packet of baking powder for sweets
  • 1 pinch of salt
  • Grated zest of 1 lemon or orange (optional for flavoring)

Preparation

  1. Preheat the oven to 180 °C and prepare a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.
  2. In a bowl, mix the whole wheat flour with the brown sugar, baking powder, and salt.
  3. In another bowl, beat the egg with the oil and milk until you have a smooth mixture.
  4. If you wish to flavor your donuts, add the grated lemon or orange zest now.
  5. Combine the liquid ingredients with the dry ingredients and mix well to obtain a soft and compact dough.
  6. Transfer the dough onto a lightly floured surface and work it briefly (not too much to avoid overheating the dough).
  7. Divide the dough into portions and shape them into cylinders, then join at the ends to create the classic donut shape.
  8. Place the donuts on the prepared sheet, leaving some space between them.
  9. Bake for about 15-20 minutes, until the donuts are slightly golden.
  10. Remove from the oven and let cool on a rack before serving.

Once cooled, if you wish, you can dust the donuts with a bit of powdered sugar for an extra touch of sweetness.

Curiosity

Baked donuts are a great alternative to fried versions, especially for those who are careful about their diet but do not want to give up a treat. Baking allows for a significant reduction in fats and results in a lighter product, but equally satisfying. Moreover, the use of whole wheat flour adds a touch of beneficial fiber to your diet.
