Baked whole wheat donuts
17/11/2023Here is the recipe for baked whole wheat donuts, a healthier and lighter version compared to the classic fried donuts.
Ingredients
- 250 grams of whole wheat flour
- 50 grams of brown sugar
- 1 egg (at room temperature)
- 50 ml of seed oil or coconut oil
- 120 ml of milk (vegetable milk for a lactose-free version is also fine)
- 1 packet of baking powder for sweets
- 1 pinch of salt
- Grated zest of 1 lemon or orange (optional for flavoring)
Preparation
- Preheat the oven to 180 °C and prepare a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.
- In a bowl, mix the whole wheat flour with the brown sugar, baking powder, and salt.
- In another bowl, beat the egg with the oil and milk until you have a smooth mixture.
- If you wish to flavor your donuts, add the grated lemon or orange zest now.
- Combine the liquid ingredients with the dry ingredients and mix well to obtain a soft and compact dough.
- Transfer the dough onto a lightly floured surface and work it briefly (not too much to avoid overheating the dough).
- Divide the dough into portions and shape them into cylinders, then join at the ends to create the classic donut shape.
- Place the donuts on the prepared sheet, leaving some space between them.
- Bake for about 15-20 minutes, until the donuts are slightly golden.
- Remove from the oven and let cool on a rack before serving.
Once cooled, if you wish, you can dust the donuts with a bit of powdered sugar for an extra touch of sweetness.
Curiosity
Baked donuts are a great alternative to fried versions, especially for those who are careful about their diet but do not want to give up a treat. Baking allows for a significant reduction in fats and results in a lighter product, but equally satisfying. Moreover, the use of whole wheat flour adds a touch of beneficial fiber to your diet.
