Avocado toast

Avocado Toast is a simple and very popular dish. Here’s how to prepare it with an Italian twist.

Ingredients

  • 2 slices of bread of your choice (rustic or whole grain bread work very well)
  • 1 ripe avocado
  • Juice of 1/2 lemon
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • Extra virgin olive oil to taste
  • A pinch of red pepper flakes (optional)
  • 2 slices of prosciutto (optional, for an Italian touch)
  • Pecorino Romano or grated Parmesan cheese (optional, for an Italian savory note)

Preparation

  1. Toast the bread slices until they become crispy and golden.
  2. Cut the avocado in half, remove the pit and scoop out the pulp with a spoon.
  3. Mash the avocado in a bowl with a fork. Add the lemon juice and mix; this will prevent the avocado from oxidizing and turning brown.
  4. Season with salt and pepper to your taste and, if you like, a drizzle of extra virgin olive oil and a pinch of red pepper flakes.
  5. Spread the avocado mixture evenly on the toasted slices of bread.
  6. If you want to add an Italian touch, lay a slice of prosciutto on top of the avocado and sprinkle some grated cheese over it.
  7. Serve immediately to enjoy the Avocado Toast while the bread is still crunchy.

Fun Fact

Avocado Toast has rapidly gained popularity especially among Millennials for its simplicity, its satisfying nature, and the nutritional qualities of avocado, which is rich in healthy fats, fiber, and vitamins.
