Apple Crumble with Chocolate Sauce

The apple crumble with chocolate sauce is a scrumptious and quite simple dessert to make. Here is how to prepare it:

Ingredients

For the crumble:

  • 300 g of all-purpose flour
  • 150 g of cold butter, cubed
  • 150 g of sugar
  • 1 egg
  • 1 pinch of salt
  • 1 teaspoon of baking powder
  • Grated zest of 1 lemon
  • 3-4 apples (such as Golden or Renette)
  • Cinnamon powder to taste
  • Brown sugar to taste

For the chocolate sauce:

  • 100 g of good quality dark chocolate
  • 100 ml of cooking cream
  • 1 tablespoon of sugar (optional, depending on the desired sweetness)

Preparation

  1. In a large bowl, mix the flour with the sugar, salt, baking powder, and lemon zest. Add the cold cubed butter and work with the fingertips to obtain a sandy mixture.
  2. Add the egg and knead quickly to form large crumbs; do not overwork the dough to avoid it getting warm.
  3. Peel the apples, remove the core, and cut them into small cubes. Season the apple cubes with brown sugar and cinnamon to taste.
  4. Take a baking pan (about 24 cm in diameter) and line it with parchment paper. Pour half of the crumble mixture on the bottom and press it down slightly with your hands.
  5. Evenly distribute the seasoned apples over the crumble layer and cover with the remaining mixture, allowing the crumbs to form an uneven surface.
  6. Bake in a preheated oven at 180 °C for about 35-40 minutes, until the surface becomes golden and crunchy.
  7. In the meantime, prepare the chocolate sauce. Break the dark chocolate into pieces and place it in a saucepan with the cream and sugar (if used). Melt over low heat, stirring constantly until you get a smooth and velvety sauce.
  8. Allow the crumble to cool before serving it and accompany with the warm chocolate sauce.

Did you know?

The crumble gets its name from its typical “crumbled” texture, which is created by the presence of cold butter in the dough. This cake lends itself to numerous variations, both in terms of filling and topping. The chocolate sauce, for example, is an unconventional pairing but much loved by dessert aficionados.
