Apple pie bars

I can provide you with a recipe for delicious Apple Pie Bars, which are a variation in the form of bars of the classic American apple pie. Here is how to prepare them, with an Italian touch you might want to use apples typical of your area and maybe a pinch of cinnamon to enhance the autumn flavors.

Ingredients

  • 300 g of flour
  • 50 g of brown sugar
  • 225 g of cold butter, cubed
  • 1/2 teaspoon of salt

For the filling:

  • 900 g of apples (preferably tart varieties), peeled, cored, and thinly sliced
  • 100 g of brown sugar
  • 2 teaspoons of lemon juice
  • 2 teaspoons of ground cinnamon
  • A pinch of nutmeg
  • 2 tablespoons of flour

For the topping:

  • 75 g of flour
  • 65 g of brown sugar
  • 1 teaspoon of ground cinnamon
  • 50 g of cold butter, cubed

Preparation

  1. Turn on the oven and preheat to 180 degrees C. Line a 23 cm square baking pan with parchment paper.
  2. For the base, in a large bowl combine the flour, the 50 g of brown sugar, and the salt. Add the cold butter and work the dough with your hands or a mixer until you get a sandy mixture. Press this mixture onto the bottom of the prepared pan and bake for 15 minutes.
  3. Meanwhile, prepare the filling by mixing the apples with brown sugar, lemon juice, cinnamon, nutmeg, and flour so the apples are well coated.
  4. After 15 minutes, remove the base from the oven and evenly distribute the apple filling over it.
  5. For the topping, in a bowl combine the flour, brown sugar, and cinnamon. Add the butter and work the mixture until it forms crumbs. Spread these crumbs over the apple filling.
  6. Bake for about 45 minutes or until the topping is golden and the apples are soft.
  7. Allow to cool completely before cutting into bars.
