French toast with apples

Here is an all-Italian twist on the classic French Toast, where we add the sweet flavor of apples. Perfect for a rich breakfast or brunch.

Ingredients

  • 4 slices of bread (preferably sandwich bread and slightly stale)
  • 2 eggs
  • 120 ml of milk
  • 1 large apple
  • 1 tablespoon of brown sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon of ground cinnamon
  • Butter or oil for cooking
  • A pinch of salt
  • Powdered sugar or maple syrup for serving (optional)

Preparation

  1. Beat the eggs in a large bowl. Add the milk, a sprinkle of cinnamon, a pinch of salt, and mix until you get a homogeneous mixture.
  2. Cut the apple into thin slices after washing and, if desired, peeling it.
  3. Dip the bread slices into the egg and milk mixture, letting them soften well on both sides.
  4. Melt a knob of butter (or heat the oil) in a pan over medium-high heat. Lay the apple slices in the pan and sprinkle them with brown sugar.
  5. Move the apples to one side of the pan or temporarily remove them and place the soaked slices of bread. Brown the bread on both sides until it becomes crispy and golden.
  6. Add the apples back to the pan next to the French Toast to further caramelize and warm them.
  7. Serve the French Toast warm with the caramelized apple slices on top and, if desired, a dusting of powdered sugar or a drizzle of maple syrup.

Curiosity

Despite its name, French Toast has very ancient origins and not exclusively French. Historically, it was prepared to reuse stale bread. The sweet version with the addition of sugar and cinnamon has become especially popular in the United States for breakfast. The apple variant adds a fruity note and makes the recipe richer and more suitable for the autumn season.
