Apple Chips

Apple chips are a delicious and healthy snack, easy to prepare. Here is the Italian recipe for crispy and sweet apple chips.

Ingredients

  • 2 large apples, organic if possible
  • Lemon juice (optional)
  • Ground cinnamon (optional)

Preparation

  1. Preheat the oven to 100-110 °C (210-230 °F). If your oven has a convection function, use it so the air circulates and dries the apple slices evenly.
  2. Wash the apples and, without peeling them to retain the nutrients in the skin, slice them as thinly as possible. A mandoline can be helpful to get uniform slices.
  3. If desired, you can soak the apple slices for a few minutes in water with lemon juice to prevent oxidation and add a hint of acidity.
  4. Pat the slices dry with paper towels. Arrange them on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper without overlapping.
  5. If you want, you can sprinkle the apples with ground cinnamon to add an extra touch of flavor.
  6. Bake the apples for about 1-2 hours. The necessary time can vary depending on the oven and the thickness of the apple slices; they should be dry to the touch and slightly golden.
  7. Turn off the oven and leave the apple chips inside for about an hour so that they continue to dry out with the residual heat.

If stored in an airtight container, the chips can last up to a week.

Curiosity

Even though it is considered a modern method of preservation, drying apples is actually a very ancient practice, used in the past to preserve fruit during the winter months. With this simple recipe, you can enjoy the flavor of apples all year round in a crispy and preservable format.
