Ingredients

  • 1 roll of rectangular puff pastry
  • 2 apples (preferably Golden or Fuji type)
  • 4 tablespoons of jam (for instance apricot or apple)
  • 1 egg yolk
  • Brown sugar (to taste)
  • Icing sugar (for garnishing)
  • Cinnamon powder (optional)

Preparation

  1. Preheat the oven to 200°C.
  2. Roll out the puff pastry and cut it into rectangles of about 10x15 cm.
  3. Peel the apples, remove the core and cut them into thin slices.
  4. Place a tablespoon of jam in the center of each pastry rectangle and arrange the apple slices neatly on top, slightly overlapping.
  5. If you wish, sprinkle the apples with some cinnamon and brown sugar.
  6. Fold the edges of the pastry inward to contain the apples and jam.
  7. In a small bowl, lightly beat the egg yolk with a little water and brush the edges of the puff pastries to achieve a nice and even golden color during baking.
  8. Bake the puff pastries for about 20 minutes or until the puff pastry is puffy and golden.
  9. Let the puff pastries cool on a rack and before serving, dust them with icing sugar.

Curiosity

Puff pastries are a classic example of quick bakery that adapts very well to the addition of various creams and fruits. The combination of apples and jam creates a balance of sweet and slightly tart flavors, which is highly appreciated in many variants of traditional Italian pastry.

Remember that you can vary the jam according to your tastes or those of your guests. Also experiment with different spices besides cinnamon, such as nutmeg or vanilla, to further personalize your puff pastries. Enjoy your meal!
